Text For The Month / Monatsspruch

JULY 2021

God is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being.
Apostelgeschichte / Acts 17.27-28

God is not far from us - but are we near to him? It is comforting to hear of his closeness. But it doesn’t always feel like this. His presence is not tangible like an earthly shepherd. His acts are not so tell-tale that we catch him at work and we can say: “There he is! God most definitely did this!” So we may easily miss his presence and start forgetting about him while going about our business (and we can be very busy, thus making little time to think of him). I catch myself almost every day (and if I’m too busy, every other day) realising that I didn’t spare a thought for God, not a prayer of thanks, praise or question. I can drift far from him.

Many people severely doubt him or have given up on the idea of a loving God altogether. Some have simply not heard of him, others can’t see his presence in the many hardships that befall humanity again and again since time immemorial: hunger, war, disease, hard luck in many shapes and forms. When I was seven, my father died unexpectedly. I couldn’t understand why (and I still can’t) and came to the conclusion there is no God. That lasted some years. Over time, unnoticed by me, the possibility of a loving God crept into my heart (or did it just re-surface?). Now I look back and can say: God is not far from any of us. He is in our life, in what we do and don’t do. But as much as I now believe in it, I can’t demonstrate or prove it to others. I can only say: “Trust me. God is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being.”
